The Story of Sakichi Toyoda
Sakichi Toyoda, the founder of Toyota Industries Corporation, possessed a strong ambition to contribute to society from his days as a youth. He had devoted his 63-year-long life to invention.
Maintaining and improving the natural environment while also aiming to achieve sustainable development is one of the most important issues facing society today. The Toyota Industries Group is now drawing up a concrete implementation program for its Environmental Action Plan, based on its Global Environmental Commitment.
The main action items include 1) establishing a low-carbon society, 2) establishing a recycling-based society, 3) environmental risk reduction and establishing a society in harmony with nature, 4) promoting environmental management. In November of 2006 the ”Environmentally Friendly Product Certification System” was established, based on our own independent certification standards, with the purpose of releasing information to the public and evaluating the degree to which items 1) to 3) above are being properly incorporated into our product development activities.
This system conforms to the Type II Environmental Label (ISO14021) prescribed by the ISO (International Organization for Standardization).
Our company's products will be subject to an ”Environmental Factor Evaluation”, which will assess numerically the level of improvement in environmental efficiency, and a ”Development Process Evaluation”, which will assess how well various items related to the environment were incorporated into the product during its development. Products which satisfy all of our internal standards will then gain certification.

We make the products which worked on environmental load reduction concerning establishing a low-carbon society, establishing a recycling-based society and environmental risk reduction and establishing a society in harmony with nature about substances of concern.
We certify some products among them which satisfy our certification standards as Environmentally Friendly Product or Super Environmentally Friendly Product.

Explanation of terminology
Expresses the ratio of the environmental efficiency of a product in development to the environmental efficiency(*1) of a standard product.
*1 Environmental Efficiency = Product functionality / Environmental impact
NOx：Nitrogen Oxides. They have harmful effects on the respiratory organs and are also a cause of acid rain and photochemical smog.
HC：Hydrocarbons. They are a cause of photochemical smog.
PM：Suspended Particulate Matter. It has harmful effects on the respiratory organs and is also said to possibly cause cancer.
Recovery Possibility rate：Expresses the percentage of mass that can be reused and recycled, as well as the energy that can be recovered from one product (part).
