Environmentally Friendly Product Certification System

Maintaining and improving the natural environment while also aiming to achieve sustainable development is one of the most important issues facing society today. The Toyota Industries Group is now drawing up a concrete implementation program for its Environmental Action Plan, based on its Global Environmental Commitment.
The main action items include 1) establishing a low-carbon society, 2) establishing a recycling-based society, 3) environmental risk reduction and establishing a society in harmony with nature, 4) promoting environmental management. In November of 2006 the ”Environmentally Friendly Product Certification System” was established, based on our own independent certification standards, with the purpose of releasing information to the public and evaluating the degree to which items 1) to 3) above are being properly incorporated into our product development activities.
This system conforms to the Type II Environmental Label (ISO14021) prescribed by the ISO (International Organization for Standardization).

Toyota Industries Corporation Environmentally Friendly Product's Label Mark

Our company's products will be subject to an ”Environmental Factor Evaluation”, which will assess numerically the level of improvement in environmental efficiency, and a ”Development Process Evaluation”, which will assess how well various items related to the environment were incorporated into the product during its development. Products which satisfy all of our internal standards will then gain certification.
In the mark to the right, the circle represents the earth and the design gives the appearance that it is being wrapped in a green leaf.

Environmentally Friendly Product and Super Environmentally Friendly Product

We make the products which worked on environmental load reduction concerning establishing a low-carbon society, establishing a recycling-based society and environmental risk reduction and establishing a society in harmony with nature about substances of concern.
We certify some products among them which satisfy our certification standards as Environmentally Friendly Product or Super Environmentally Friendly Product.

*NOx, NMHC, and PM will be applied to individual engines and engine equipped models. (gasoline vehicles, LPG vehicles, CNG vehicles, will be exempt from PM)
*If NOx, NMHC, and PM meet the regulation value they will be considered to have been cleared.

Environmentally Friendly Product should satisfy at least one of following conditions,
(1) Any of the factors to the left are equal to or above 1.3 (improved the annual rate by more than 0.06)
(2) All the factors are equal to or above 1.0

Super Environmentally Friendly Product should satisfy the above conditions and furthermore CO2 factor should be equal to or above 1.5.

Recycling natural resources Natural resource consumption
Environmental risk factors NOx
Hexavalent chromium
Development process evaluation Global warming Energy consumption (promote efficiency) Improved fuel efficiency (individual engines, internal combustion lift trucks, etc.)

Items listed to the left have all obtained a ”O” (However, this excludes items for which the standards are not applicable)

Improved cooling capability (car air conditioning compressors)
Reduced the amount of energy consumed (textile machinery, electronic parts, electric lift trucks, etc.)
Recycling natural resources Natural resource saving Miniaturization applied where possible
Reduced Weight
Reduced the number of parts
Use of recycled parts and materials as well as potentially recyclable materials
Recycling Improved ability to break down and sort
Raw materials used are indicated on plastic and rubber parts
The number of fastening parts have been limited to the minimum necessary
Improved the recovery possibility rate
Longer operating life Improved durability
Improved conservation and repair potential
Packing and packaging Reduced the amount of packing and packaging materials
Greater use of recycled paper and plastics for the packaging material
Environmental risk factors Substances of concern Satisfy our company's substances of concern control regulations, or the corresponding standards of the purchaser
Environmental information Providing information Entered information about collection, disassembly, disposal, and recycling methods, as well as cautionary items into the instruction manuals, etc.

Explanation of terminology

Factor :
Expresses the ratio of the environmental efficiency of a product in development to the environmental efficiency(*1) of a standard product.

*1 Environmental Efficiency = Product functionality / Environmental impact

NOx:Nitrogen Oxides. They have harmful effects on the respiratory organs and are also a cause of acid rain and photochemical smog.
HC:Hydrocarbons. They are a cause of photochemical smog.
PM:Suspended Particulate Matter. It has harmful effects on the respiratory organs and is also said to possibly cause cancer.
Recovery Possibility rate:Expresses the percentage of mass that can be reused and recycled, as well as the energy that can be recovered from one product (part).
