Tension between the front and rear lap winding drums of the RLM can be adjusted in increments of 0.2%, allowing users to make the winding precisely match the material type, thus smoothing irregular fleece. Both the SLM and RLM have an automatic grain adjuster which corrects the grain with a suitable coefficient of variation for the entire lap winding process. Full laps on the SLM are automatically doffed and sent to the conveyor, ensuring continuous and efficient operation until the conveyor is filled with laps. After the lap from the spool is torn off, an auto lap piecer automatically pieces the remaining lap end with the full lap from the SLM. Precise piecing gives more machine efficiency. On comber preparatory machines, a spool cleaner strips the remaining fleece off spools, which are then returned to the magazine of the SLM or RLM.
